MEET THE ARTIST: Annie Nacht Morgan, A Painter Shaped by Resilience, Urgency, & her fascination with humanity.
For this edition of MEET THE ARTIST, we’re proud to spotlight Annie Nacht Morgan, a Chicago-based painter whose work is rooted in perseverance, emotion, and an unshakable drive to create. Annie’s journey into art didn’t follow a traditional path. It emerged unexpectedly, shaped as much by physical limitation as by creative instinct.
Her paintings feel deeply human, shaped by her background in anthropology and a shared fascination with the ways people create meaning in the world. There’s something universal in that drive, to make something out of nothing, whether it’s pulling the perfect espresso, growing tomatoes, building a home, or starting a business. It’s a quiet, constant thread that runs through all of us. Her work invites you to pause, look a little closer, and feel something real. She isn’t telling you what to see…she’s simply asking for your attention, even if only for a moment.
An Unexpected Path to Painting
Annie didn’t always see herself as an artist. Painting became a serious part of her life around 2022, sparked by a single community art class that quickly turned into something more.
What began as curiosity became a commitment. Largely self-taught, she followed instinct over structure, driven by a growing need to create.
Creating Through Challenge
Annie’s path is inseparable from her experience with chronic pain. After developing early-onset arthritis in her feet, she underwent multiple surgeries and faced a long, difficult recovery, and contracted a painful condition as a result of nerve damage. At times, even sitting or standing long enough to paint was not possible.
So, she adapted.
Working in short bursts, she began completing paintings in days rather than months. What initially felt like a constraint turned into a breakthrough, leading to a series of 11 works driven by urgency and focus. These pieces are part of the Painted Molecules Series, many of which are currently on display at the U3 Café.
A Creative Surge
Annie is creating with renewed energy. Ideas that lived in her mind for years are finally taking form with a renewed commitment to creating fine art, patience, and with skill
Her work has appeared in galleries across Chicago, at one point with nearly 20 pieces on view. But for Annie, the focus remains simple: keep working, keep exploring, keep getting better.
Painting with Intention
Annie approaches her work with care and focus, striving to create something meaningful and real. Her fascination with people—expression, emotion, presence—drives much of her subject matter.
Her paintings don’t dictate meaning. They leave space for the viewer to interpret, reflect, and connect in their own way.
Art That Belongs to Everyone
Annie believes art should be accessible. Collecting isn’t about status or price—it’s about connection and choosing curation over mass production. She encourages people to support local artists and bring original work into their everyday spaces by allocating the same budget on a local artist’s print rather than one from a big-box store.
The Power of Attention
At the heart of Annie’s work is a simple hope: that people will stop and truly look. Even for a few seconds.
Because in that pause, something shifts. The work becomes personal. A moment of attention becomes a moment of connection.
