Espresso Martini: A Fresh Take on a Sweet Classic

The espresso martini was the brilliant brainchild of British bartender Dick Bradsell. Legend has it that a successful working model sidled up to his bar and requested a drink that would wake her up. He whipped up a combo of vodka, espresso, sugar, and coffee liqueur, and the rest is mixology history!

The smooth, velvety texture, balance of sweet and bitter, and invigorating caffeine kick make it a favorite among coffee lovers and cocktail enthusiasts alike.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, an espresso martini consists of vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider subbing the simple syrup for a splash of hazelnut liqueur or a dash of orange bitters.
  • If you don’t have an espresso maker at home, you don’t have to let that stop you! A shot of rich homemade cold brew concentrate can work beautifully too.
  • For an extra sweet treat, garnish with a few chocolate-covered coffee beans—ours are a collab with Chicago chocolate shop Chocs ’N Boxes—and a dusting of cocoa powder (because let’s be real, coffee and chocolate combos are always the perfect pairing) or brighten it up with and a citrus twist or candied lemon peel.

We recommend a rich dark roast to add complexity and depth. The nutty sweetness and subtle hint of spice in our 1871 Founder’s Blend make it a great option!

Carajillo: Spice and Spirit Reimagined

The origins of this boozy coffee drink are hotly debated—from a drink intended to give Spanish soldiers courage and vigor to a morning mix that helped Catalan workers quickly perk up before a long day of labor. However it first got its start, the Carajillo strikes a beautiful balance between spicy and sweet.

Originally a simple mix to give drinkers an energizing boost, today, the Carajillo is a beloved Mexican aperitif, served as an opportunity to wind down, digest, and engage in after-dinner conversations.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, a Carajillo consists of espresso and brandy, rum, or Licor 43 (a Spanish liqueur with notes of vanilla and citrus), often served over ice.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For a richer, more nuanced base, look for a medium-roast whole bean coffee—the nutty, chocolatey notes will complement the sweetness of the liqueur. We think our Single-Origin Tarrazu Estate roast would make the perfect pairing, and bonus, and we also offer it as a decaf whole bean coffee option, which gives you all the great flavor but will let you rest easy when you’re ready.
  • Instead of the traditional spirits, consider using a high-quality aged tequila or mezcal for a smoky, complex twist.
  • If you like the sound of Licor 43 but worry liqueur is too sweet for your tastes, you can play with creating your own homemade infused liquor. Fill a mason jar with rum, add a couple of cinnamon sticks or vanilla bean pods, and seal up with a lid. Let your creation steep in a cool, dark place for a few days before crafting your handmade cocktail.

Garnish you finished drink with a single star anise pod and a thin slice of crystallized ginger for a warm, aromatic, and extra spicy finish.

White Russian: A Creamy Classic with a Modern Kick

Believe it or not, the history of the White Russian starts in Belgium, not Russia! In the late 1940s, Belgian mixologist Gustave Tops wanted to create a special drink for the American ambassador, Perle Mesta, who was known for her lavish soirees. His creation—a mix of coffee liqueur and vodka—was called a Black Russian, a nod to the fact that the drink relies heavily on vodka, most of which was sourced from Russia at the time.

Later, Tops’s original creation got a smooth update with the addition of heavy cream, and the White Russian was born!

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, a White Russian consists of vodka, coffee liqueur, and heavy cream.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • The classic version relies on coffee liqueur for the flavor, but we think that adding a shot of actual coffee adds additional depth and drama! We recommend trying our Perfectly Wired blend, brewed as a cold brew concentrate. Its rich, chocolatey notes will shine and will hold their own against the sweet, creamy elements of the drink.
  • Instead of heavy cream, consider using a barista-grade oat milk or a rich coconut cream for a dairy-free, vegan alternative.
  • To add a touch of spice, incorporate a dash of cardamom or cinnamon into the cream before mixing.
  • Take the whole drink back to its beginnings, the simple two-ingredient Black Russian. Play with swapping out the coffee liqueur for shots of cold brew, or keep the coffee liqueur and simply add equal parts cold brew for a richer flavor profile.

Irish Coffee: A Warm Embrace with a Contemporary Edge

In 1943, on a dark and stormy night in Limerick, Ireland, a flight bound for NY had just been turned back and forced to land at Foynes air base. Joe Sheridan, the chef at the port restaurant, took pity on these weary passengers and decided to pull together a drink that would warm them up and calm their nerves—coffee, cream, sugar, and a hearty dose of Irish whisky.

Irish coffee is a true classic, whether it’s served as a tasty aperitif or as a standalone treat. It’s the perfect drink for a cold winter’s day or a cozy night in.

The Classic Coffee Drink Foundation:

Traditionally, Irish coffee is made with hot black coffee, Irish whisky, sugar, and topped with a layer of lightly whipped cream.

Our Reimagined Coffee-Based Cocktail:

  • For a richer, more robust flavor, look for a coffee with bold, smoky notes, which will pair beautifully with the warmth of the whisky and the sweetness of the sugar. We think our Espresso Obsessed has the perfect profile, with notes of dark chocolate, berry, and a hint of smokiness.
  • Instead of traditional sugar, try using brown sugar or a touch of maple syrup for a deeper, more nuanced sweetness.
  • While you can use store-bought whipped cream, making it yourself gives you a chance to add your own personal flair. Lightly whip heavy cream with a touch of vanilla extract, caramel syrup, or a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon.
  • If whisky isn’t really your thing, try subbing it out for bourbon, dark rum, or even tequila for a slightly different flavor profile.
