How to Make Stovetop “Steamed” Milk
You’ll see a few of our recipes call for steamed milk. While steaming technically requires a steam wand, which uses steam to heat the milk and creates a foamy texture, you can create a pretty close dupe by frothing milk on your stovetop. Here’s how:
- Heat milk on medium in a saucepan on your stovetop. Stir continuously to avoid scalding, and monitor the temperature with a thermometer.
- When your milk reaches 150ºF, remove it from the heat.
- Using either a handheld frother, immersion blender, or a good old-fashioned whisk, vigorously whisk the heated milk. This will introduce air and help create a foamy texture.
- Keep going until your milk is frothy, which usually takes a minute or two.
Latte Recipes
A timeless favorite, the latte is a perfect blend of espresso and steamed milk. The simplicity and elegance of this classic beverage make it a classic base for so many creative coffee drinks. At its core, a latte is espresso and a healthy dose of steamed milk, but from there, anything goes! We love the balance of creaminess and rich bitterness in a classic latte and the way the bright, floral flavors of honey and lavender complement the earthy flavors of espresso.

Classic Latte Recipe
Perfecting the classic latte is the cornerstone of any home barista’s repertoire. It’s a timeless recipe that provides a solid foundation for learning a whole world of coffee drinks, and once you’ve got it down, there’s no limit to the incredible coffee creations you can pull together.
Ingredients:
- 1 shot of espresso
- 6 fl ounces milk (or milk alternative)
Instructions:
- Heat the milk using either a steam wand or our guide above.
- Grind your favorite whole bean coffee (dark roast coffee works especially well for the quick extraction necessary in espresso).
- Use your preferred espresso maker to extract a rich, flavorful shot, which will produce about 1 ounce of espresso. Be sure to choose a cup big enough to accommodate the espresso, milk, and a hearty dose of that beautiful foam you created.
- Pour the steamed milk over the espresso. Try to pour slowly enough that only the liquid pours out, leaving the foam in the pitcher or pan (you can also use a spoon to help hold back the froth).
- Spoon the foam onto the top of the drink surface and enjoy!
Honey Lavender Latte Recipe
A soothing and aromatic beverage, this honey lavender latte is a delightful treat. The combination of honey and lavender creates a truly calming and comforting drink. Honey, with its natural sweetness and health benefits, pairs perfectly with the floral notes of lavender, without overpowering the rich flavors of the espresso.
Ingredients:
- 1 shot of espresso
- 6 fl ounces milk (or milk alternative)
- ⅔ cup of honey
- ¼ cup of food-grade dried lavender
- 1 cup water
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan, bring the water and lavender to a boil, then remove from heat. Allow the water to cool before using a fine strainer to separate the lavender from the water. Keep the water and discard the lavender.
- Heat the lavender-infused water over medium heat, then stir in honey. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until completely combined. (Note: You’ll have syrup to spare when you’re done making your latte! Be sure to store it in the refrigerator.)
- Add two tablespoons of your syrup to the bottom of a mug. We’ll be adding the espresso and milk to this cup, so make sure it’s big enough to hold all this delicious goodness!
- Heat the milk using either a frothing machine or our guide above.
- Grind your favorite whole bean coffee (dark roast coffees work especially well for the quick extraction necessary in espresso).
- Use your preferred espresso maker to extract a rich, flavorful shot, which will produce about 1 ounce of espresso, into the cup with your honey lavender syrup.
- Pour the steamed milk over the espresso. Try to pour slowly enough that only the liquid pours out, leaving the foam in the pitcher or pan (you can also use a spoon to help hold back the froth).
Spoon the foam onto the top of the drink surface, and take a moment to bask in the glow of your coffee skills before you take your first sip!
Mocha Recipes
Like lattes, mochas start with a base of espresso and steamed milk, but what makes mochas decadent and unique is the addition of either chocolate sauce, cocoa powder, or chunks of chocolate. The blend can enhance the flavors of the espresso—highlighting or mellowing out the rich, bitter notes.
Aeropress Mocha Recipe
A unique twist on the classic mocha, this recipe utilizes the versatility of the Aeropress. This simple yet ingenious brewing device has revolutionized the way we enjoy coffee. With its compact design and ability to produce a wide range of flavors, the Aeropress offers a convenient and delicious way to brew coffee at home.

- Add the chocolate syrup and salt to your mug.

- Grind your favorite whole bean coffee (dark roast coffee works especially well for the quick extraction necessary in espresso), and then the coffee grounds to the Aeropress brew chamber.
- Add enough water to the Aeropress to reach the 1.5 mark. Swirl to ensure the coffee is uniformly wet.
